What actually moves a business into the Google 3-pack: relevance, distance and prominence explained with the work we do for UK clients.
The local pack — the map and three businesses Google shows for searches with local intent — takes the majority of clicks for those searches. Getting into it is not mysterious. It is a set of signals, most of which you control, weighed against the businesses nearest to the searcher. Here is how we approach it for a UK client, in the order we do it.
There is no single local pack. It is generated per search, per location. "Dentist" searched from a phone in Didsbury shows a different three from "dentist Manchester" searched from a desktop in Salford. Before doing anything, decide the five or so searches that matter most and look at the pack for each from the middle of your service area. Note who is there and — critically — what their primary category is. That is the category you need.
Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Almost all of it is category and services.
In our experience this step alone moves a profile within two to four weeks if it was previously wrong, and it is wrong more often than not.
You cannot move the business. You can:
Prominence decides the order among eligible, nearby businesses. It is the slow part and the part competitors neglect.
Match or beat the review count of the third business in the pack, then keep a steady flow. Ask every customer with a direct link, at the point of satisfaction. Respond to every review. Never buy or gate them — see how to get more reviews legally.
Correct, consistent NAP across the UK sources that matter. An old phone number on Yell is a silent handbrake. The list.
Local links from organisations you belong to, sponsor or supply. Three to five a month is a strong programme; most competitors have none.
A proper landing page for the profile to link to, service pages that rank organically, fast and mobile-first. Organic strength feeds pack rankings.
Once you are in the pack, behaviour keeps you there. Recent photos, a complete description, accurate hours, answered Q&A, a high rating and thoughtful review responses all raise the click, call and direction-request rate — and profiles that convert hold their position.
Nothing loses a pack position faster than losing the profile. No keywords in the name, no ineligible address, no review bursts, no categories you do not operate in, and make big edits one at a time. If it happens anyway: reinstatement guide.
| Change | Typical time to see movement |
|---|---|
| Primary category correction | 1–4 weeks |
| Services, attributes, description | 2–4 weeks |
| Landing page rewrite | 2–6 weeks |
| Citation clean-up | 4–8 weeks |
| Review programme | Continuous; visible impact from month 2–3 |
| Local links | 2–4 months |
Competitive city-centre packs — dentists in central Manchester, solicitors in Birmingham — take three to six months to enter and hold. Quieter markets move in weeks.
You do not optimise for the words "near me". Google translates them to the searcher's location. What ranks for "plumber near me" is the same thing that ranks for "plumber" from that spot: category, proximity, prominence. Putting "near me" on your website does nothing.
