At 6pm someone nearby searches "restaurants near me". Be on their map.
Nobody books the fourth result. Restaurant local SEO is about being one of the three on the map for your cuisine and your area, with photos that make the choice, a rating that confirms it, and a booking button that closes it.
What is different about hospitality
- The search happens on the street. Most restaurant searches are on phones, near the restaurant, within an hour of eating. Proximity and hours accuracy matter more than anywhere else; "Closed" at 6pm because you never set special hours loses the table.
- Photos decide. Google shows a photo carousel before the rating. Restaurants with recent, appetising, owner-uploaded photos get more direction requests; the ones relying on customer snapshots of half-eaten plates do not.
- Cuisine categories. "Italian restaurant" and "Restaurant" have different packs. So do "Café", "Coffee shop" and "Brunch restaurant". Choosing right widens or narrows your competition dramatically.
- Menus and attributes on the profile. Menu links, dish photos with prices, dietary attributes (vegan options, gluten-free), amenities (outdoor seating, dog-friendly) all appear as filters and in AI-generated summaries of "best X near me".
- Review volume is high — in both directions. Restaurants get more reviews than any category, and more unfair ones. Response speed and tone are part of the product.
- Third-party platforms. TripAdvisor, OpenTable, Deliveroo and Uber Eats listings are citations, review sources and revenue channels. Their data must match your profile.
What we do for restaurants
- Test cuisine category vs generic against the pack for your area and time of day.
- Menu on the profile: link, sections, dish photos, prices; dietary and amenity attributes complete.
- Photo plan: a shot list per month, exterior day and night, every signature dish, the room when it's full.
- Reserve with Google connected; order links for delivery platforms set correctly.
- Hours, special hours for bank holidays and Christmas set in advance; "More hours" for kitchen vs bar.
- Review process at the table (QR on the bill folder) and same-day responses in the restaurant's voice.
- Posts for menus, events and offers fortnightly; Q&A seeded with parking, dogs, kids, groups, dietary.
- Citations: TripAdvisor, OpenTable/TheFork, Design My Night, Hardens, local food guides, plus general UK sources.
Where restaurant profiles go wrong
Hours last updated in 2023
Google shows "Closed" or "Closing soon" at exactly the moment the search happens. Every bank holiday without special hours is a night of lost tables.
Category "Restaurant", nothing else
Eligible for the hardest pack in town and none of the easier cuisine packs. Add the cuisine as primary and the rest as secondaries.
Arguing with a reviewer
A long, defensive reply to a one-star review is read by every potential diner. Two calm sentences and a name do the job.
Restaurants ask us
Which category should a restaurant use?
The most specific cuisine category that is true: "Italian restaurant", "Indian restaurant", "Gastropub", "Sushi restaurant". "Restaurant" as the primary makes you eligible for the broadest search and the toughest pack. We test the cuisine term against the generic one in your area.
Do photos really affect ranking?
Photos affect whether people choose you, and Google measures whether people choose you. Restaurants are the most photo-driven category on Maps: dishes, interior, exterior at night, the bar. Customers upload too — the more you upload, the less you depend on theirs.
Should I connect a booking system?
If your system supports Reserve with Google (most do: OpenTable, TheFork, ResDiary, SevenRooms, Quandoo), yes. It puts a "Reserve a table" button on the profile and in Maps, and bookings made there are tracked in your Performance data.
How do I deal with a one-star review about a bad night?
Respond within a day, briefly, without arguing: acknowledge, apologise for the experience, say what has changed if anything, invite them back through a named person. The response is for the next hundred diners reading it. If the review is fake or from a competitor, flag it — details in our review removal guide.
