How to Rank in the Google Local Pack (UK, 2026)
What actually moves a business into the Google 3-pack: relevance, distance and prominence explained with the work we do for UK clients.

When paid placement on Maps makes sense, how Local Services Ads work in the UK, and how to combine them with organic local SEO.
Organic local SEO is the long-term asset. Paid placement on Maps is the tap you can turn on while it builds, or when you need more than the pack can give. Two products matter for UK businesses: Google Ads with location assets (the "sponsored" pin at the top of the pack and on Maps), and Local Services Ads. Here is what each does, what it costs, and how we combine them with organic work.
A standard Google Ads search campaign, with your Business Profile linked as a location asset, becomes eligible to show a sponsored result at the top of the local pack and a promoted pin on Google Maps. You bid on keywords as usual; the ad shows your profile's name, rating, address and a call or directions button.
UK CPCs for local service terms run from around £1 for retail and hospitality to £15–£40+ for legal, financial and emergency trades. A test budget of £500–£1,000 a month for a month tells you whether it converts.
A separate product, shown above everything else for eligible categories, with a "Google Guaranteed" or "Google Screened" badge. You pay per lead (a call or message), not per click, and can dispute invalid leads. Available in the UK for a growing list of categories: plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, cleaners, movers, roofers, garage doors, pest control, lawyers, estate agents, financial planners and others.
LSA position is driven by review rating and count (from your Business Profile), responsiveness to leads, proximity, hours and your budget. Businesses that answer the phone rank higher. It rewards the same things organic local SEO rewards, which is why the two work well together.
Background and licence checks, business registration, insurance for some categories. Setup takes two to four weeks. Reviews on your Business Profile carry across, so a profile with strong reviews launches ahead.
Per-lead prices are set by Google per category and area — typically £10–£60 for trades, more for legal and financial. You set a weekly budget. Dispute leads that are spam, wrong service or outside your area within the window; Google credits most legitimate disputes.
| Situation | Approach |
|---|---|
| New business, no reviews | Organic foundations + Google Ads on Maps for 3–6 months while reviews and citations build; LSAs once reviews reach double figures |
| Established, in the pack, want more | LSAs if eligible (they sit above the pack); Ads for services the profile does not rank for |
| Established, not in the pack | Organic first — the pack is cheaper than any ad long-term; Ads only for urgent-intent terms meanwhile |
| Multi-location | LSAs per location; Ads with location-specific campaigns; organic structure as in multi-location SEO |
Separate phone numbers or call tracking per channel. Cost per lead from Ads and LSAs against the (near-zero marginal) cost per lead from organic. Most businesses we work with find organic leads cost a fifth of paid ones after the first six months, which is the argument for doing both: paid now, organic to replace it.
